This work has been re-edited and enlarged several times, and is indispensable to anybody concerned with the Napoleonic army and institutions. It is a highly convenient work of prosopography, accompanied by many statistical tables and illustrations. The first edition won the Grand Prix of the Fondation in 1987 and the fourth edition, published in 2000 by Christian/Jas, was awarded the Prix Guizot of the Académie française.
