How to apply for a grant

Every year the Fondation Napoléon encourages the study of the First and Second Empires by awarding up to eight research grants to French or non-French students who are studying for a PhD on a First- or Second-Empire subject or the 19th century (modification to the prize regulations, validated by the Fondation Napoléon Board of Directors on 11 December 2019). Works may cover all aspects of history (politics, economics, art, law, literature, etc.), provided they contribute to a better understanding of the First and Second Empire periods. The grants are awarded by the same jury as for the Fondation Napoléon Grands Prix [History Prize]. Each research grant is worth 7,500 Euros.

Application guidelines (in French ; last update : Juillet 2024).

It is possible to receive a grant for a PhD to be written in English. However, such applicants must agree to spend half of the grant award either on research work in France or on French language instruction (receipts will be requested).  Dossiers should reach the Fondation by 30 September of the year in question.
