Obituary > Prince Gabriel de Broglie (1931-2025)

We were saddened to learn of the death of Prince Gabriel de Broglie, a senior civil servant, member of the Académie française and the Académie des Sciences morales et politiques, Chancellor and then Honorary Chancellor of the Institut de France. He was a member of the jury for the History Prizes and grants awarded by the Fondation Napoléon.

In addition to the senior positions he held (at the Conseil d’État, in several ministerial cabinets including those of Maurice Schumann and Maurice Couve de Murville, in the audiovisual sector and in numerous public bodies), he was also a renowned historian and had published nearly thirty books, including biographies of Guizot, Mac Mahon, Mme de Genlis, General Valence and Joseph-Alexandre de Ségur. A particular honour was his election to both the Académie des Sciences morales et politiques in 1997 and to the Académie française in 2001. He was also Chancellor of the Institut de France from 2006 to 2017.

He joined the jury of the Fondation Napoléon in 1988 and served on it until last year, taking part in the debates with precision and seriousness. Before that, he had taken part in the administrative operations that led to the creation of our institution, alongside Baron Gourgaud and Olivier Guichard.

The Fondation Napoléon extends its condolences to his wife and family.
