Michel Kerautret: Documents diplomatiques du Consulat et de l’Empire. Les Grandes traités du consulat (1799-1804) (Diplomatic documents of the Consulate and the Empire: Major Treaties of the Consulate)

2002kerautretTrait+

The advent of Napoleon Bonaparte opened a time in France when diplomatic issues were paramount, especially during the Consulate. Michel Kerautret presents here the full texts of treaties signed by France, from the Treaty of Basel (1795), to the Treaty of subsidies with Portugal (1804). The author provides an overview of the diplomatic situation, the negotiations, the ratifications. Each treaty is accompanied by an introduction and explanatory notes. The first part, “heritage”, is devoted to the laws in force at the time of the coup d’État of Brumaire, some of which had been negotiated by Bonaparte. Then comes “pacification” with the great texts that led France to peace in general. The third part, “mobilization”, reports on the efforts of the consular diplomacy to prepare for future wars, after the rupture of the Peace of Amiens.

This book is the first volume in a series devoted to the diplomatic documents of the Consulate and the Empire: see Volume 2: 1804-1810 and Volume 3: 1810-1815.
